The Eel and the Blowfish

My co-author, Terry Marks-Tarlow and I have been psychotherapists for decades. Day in and day out, we sit with the unspeakable. We feel the shame that trauma survivors and their perpetrators grapple with, especially if their truths remain hidden. In the form of a graphic novel, this mythic tale about sexual trauma is designed to lessen the terror and anxiety associated with sexual abuse. The psychedelic, playful images help transform suffering into healing,* We encourage readers to expand their sense of the possible and trauma sufferers to find the courage to speak. In addition to adult trauma sufferers, this novel is for their family and friends, and for clinicians.

*While our novel is meant to be inspirational and help resolve suffering, it is not intended to be a substitute for seeking professional psychological or medical guidance.

Imagination, Creativity and Spirituality in Psychotherapy: Welcome to Wonderland

My aim with this book is to awaken creative desire and expand the imagination of the psychotherapist and, in turn, her patient. Each chapter is meant to surprise the reader and help him or her see the world in a new way. Many varieties of imagination are explored -- the spiritual, the relational, the dreamworld, the aesthetic and the adaptive. I offer space to reflect, to daydream, to remember; space to pursue goals, to make new connections; space to take risks and space to be wrong. The psychotherapist is encouraged to find her own voice, be poetic, dare to create, converse with other disciplines and, most especially, enter the world of dreams. The clinician will come away with tools to carry on the work of moving the field of psychotherapy forward as well as work ever more effectively with patients.
